First Up

Nick: We are now less than a week away from our Startups to Watch event and tickets are still available!

We will have food. We will have drink. And we will have startups.

As a reminder, tickets are free for startup founders and employees, so don't miss out. Let's drop a Beat...

The Big One

A breakdown on the day's biggest Inno story.

Another Acquisition for Denver Cannabis Tech Company

Denver cannabis tech company Helix TCS is on a mission to be the leading service provider for the cannabis industry.

Building on a string of recent moves, the Greenwood Village cannabis tech company has acquired Denver's Amercanex International Exchange, an electronic trading platform for legal cannabis.

The move allows Helix to create an electronic communications network that can integrate blockchain technology to facilitate real-time transactions of wholesale cannabis products between licensed operators in regulated markets.

This is the fourth acquisition Helix has made since 2016, growing rapidly in the legal cannabis space. In 2016, the company acquired Cannabase, a wholesale cannabis platform, made a move for cannabis security firm Security Grade Protective Services in 2017, and acquired software development firm Engeni SA last year.

In 2018, the Denver Tech Center-based company also merged with BioTrackTHC, a seed-to-sale tracking platform.

"Helix TCS now possesses the unique technology suite needed to scale the industry's first compliant wholesale cannabis exchange worldwide," said Zachary L. Venegas, Executive Chairman and CEO of Helix TCS. "Clients of BioTrackTHC, Amercanex, and Cannabase, which is likely the largest network of licensed cannabis operators in the industry, will be the first to enjoy the competitive advantages and benefits of our industry-leading Critical Infrastructure Services Platform."

Making Moves

Inside the people, companies and organizations making moves today.

Techstars Anywhere

With relocation often serving as a barrier to entry into Techstars, the Boulder-based accelerator launched Techstars Anywhere a few years ago.

The remote accelerator program announced its third class yesterday and a Denver startup made the 10-team cut.

Summed gives users the convenience of shopping like a credit card, but with the benefit of repaying your balance like a low-rate installment loan.

Check out the announcement here for more on the Techstars Anywhere class.

Investing $500M in American Hemp

Continuing with the cannabis theme, Canada-based Canopy Growth announced that it plans to invest up to $500M in U.S. hemp by adding hemp production in Rhode Island and two to three other states.

Now, Colorado hasn't yet been mentioned in the hemp expansion, but Canopy has had recent dealings in the state.

In November 2018, the company bought Evergreen-based cannabis research startup ebbu for $330M. The move helped Canopy gain control of more than 40 cannabis-related patent filings as they push to reduce the cost of CBD production.

One More Day for Tech Madness Nominations

Know of a growing startup or just one with a great idea? Well, there is still one day remaining for Colorado Inno's Tech Madness nominations.

In this bracket-style challenge, readers get to submit startups to participate in a friendly competition designed to generate awareness and excitement for the local innovation community.

In March, we'll reveal the bracket. We will seed the "teams" based on a variety of factors, including funding raised, number of employees and insights from our editorial staff on trajectory. Voting for each match will be open to community voting, with readers answering just one question - who would you invest in?

Get your
nominations in here and make sure to share the competition with others.

The fun stuff.

It Snowed, Again

On most days, I might've complained about Denver's utter lack of interest in clearing snow off of the sidewalks and streets.

But, not today.

Today, we're just going to marvel at the ingenuity of this unbothered resident. He could not care less about the snow-covered sidewalk and decided it was the perfect time to get some cardio in. Major props.
